How to avoid tourist traps when eating in Florence?
Never eat where someone is trying to pull you inside. If a server is standing outside waving menus, calling out to passersby, or urging you to “come in, best pasta in Florence! In Italy (and across much of Europe), the best restaurants don’t need to beg for customers. They’re busy. Doubts about tipping in Italy are common among my guests. If you want a quick answer here it is: Tipping in Italy isn’t automatic, and there’s no “moral obligation” as there may be in the US. No one will be offended if you don’t tip, so if you prefer not to, that’s OK.Generally, it’s not rude to tip in Italy, but it can be seen as unnecessary in certain situations. Since tipping is not expected in some cases, locals may find large tips unusual or overly generous. That said, certain areas can feel uncomfortable late at night, particularly if you’re unfamiliar with the city or walking alone. Around Santa Maria Novella station (late at night) 🌉 5️⃣ Isolated River Stretches & Underpasses The main bridges like Ponte Vecchio are lively at night. But certain darker stretches along the Arno or pedestrian underpasses can feel empty. Stick to main, well-lit routes when walking back to your accommodation. Important perspective Florence is not a dangerous city.

Florence deserves at least one well-organized day: see the Accademia (David), tour the Uffizi Gallery (Renaissance art), visit the Duomo Museum (original bronze Baptistery doors) or the underrated Bargello (best statues), and do my guidebooks’ self-guided Renaissance Walk (also available as a free audio tour). If you are visiting Florence for a limited amount of time, it is absolutely possible to visit the Uffizi Gallery and Accademia Gallery in just one day. To save time, it is highly recommended to pre-book your tickets to each museum.
