Why is it called white rhino?
Name Origin The name “white rhino” comes from the Afrikaan’s word “weit” or “wyd” (meaning “wide”), referring to the animal’s wide, square lip. Early English settlers misinterpreted this for word for “white”, and the name stuck! White rhinos is taken from the Afrikaans word describing its mouth wyd meaning wide for its unsually wide square lip. Early English settlers misinterpreted the wyd for white and so assumed that they were being called white rhinos by the Dutch. They named other species black rhinos to differentiate.
