What is the Kalita Wave?
The Kalita Wave is a unique brewing process with tailor-made filters and brewers that provide foolproof pour over coffee extractions. The filters feature a 20-wave design that limits contact between the brewer so water can flow evenly and at just the right rate. Step by Step Kalita Wave Preparation Pour hot water out of both the server and the Kalita Wave. STEP 3 • Place Kalita Wave and brewing server on scale and tare. Add exactly 25 g of freshly ground coffee to the filter and level out.Kalita is a Japanese based company that specializes in producing coffee brewing equipment. FIVE: Start timer and your pour at the same time.Recommended range of 24-32 grams of coffee. Grind size in brewing is an important consideration. The standard approach for Kalita Wave is to grind medium, and then adjust from there.For strong coffee lovers, the Kalita Wave is the ideal pour-over dripper. The ‘default’ flavor profile is much more intense than other drippers I’ve used, which will suit fans of dark roast coffee. However, it’s still prime real estate for experimentation, and can easily be adapted for lighter preferences.

In part, that’s thanks to its flat bottom, which promotes more-even water drainage, so it’s easier—even for beginners—to get consistent results.The flat bottom can give you much better and even extraction, less channeling, richer and more complex taste in the cup, while the V60 or Chemex will give you more sharpness and clarity in the cup. Kalita is also more forgiving to mistakes especially when you’re brewing coffee in the morning.Straight to the Point Our favorite pour-over coffee makers are the Hario V60 Ceramic Coffee Dripper and Kalita Wave 185 Dripper. The Kalita Wave 185 dripper is Parlor’s go-to pour-over brewer, both at our roastery and at home. Its unique flat-bottom design encourages even extraction and temperature stability. We favor the resulting cup’s expression of our coffees when brewed using a 1:16 coffee-to-water ratio. Made in Japan. Brew directly into a cup, or mount it on a Kalita Glass Server. We recommend this size (#185) for brewing about 26-45 grams of coffee, yielding between 16 and 26 ounces of brewed coffee. Filters available here.
