Fearful of his growing power and convinced that Caesar intended to make himself absolute ruler of Rome, a group of senators plotted to kill him. On March 15, 44 b. Brutus and Cassius, led the conspirators into the Senate chamber and stabbed Caesar to death. Caesar attempted to get away, but, blinded by blood, he tripped and fell; the men continued stabbing him as he lay defenceless on the lower steps of the portico. According to Roman historian Eutropius, around 60 or more men participated in the assassination. Caesar was stabbed 23 times.
