What is a briki coffee?
A briki is a small, long-handled pot traditionally used in Greek coffee preparation. It is specifically designed to brew Greek coffee, known as ellinikos kafes, by heating finely ground coffee with water and sugar directly over a stovetop. In my experience, the coffee pot is a key element in brewing Greek and Turkish coffee. For Greek coffee, I use a briki, a small, open-top pot with a long handle. On the other hand, for Turkish coffee, I use a cezve, a narrow-necked pot, also known as an ibrik, that traps the foam.
How does a briki work?
Greek coffee is made in a briki, a small pot with a long handle. The coffee is finely ground like powdered sugar. You need an extra-fine grind size because Greek coffee is not filtered. Boil water and coffee together in the briki until you get a nice cream, known as the kaimaki. But don’t fret… not having a briki should not prevent you from making Greek coffee; you can use a small pot (if it has a pouring spout…even better). It will still taste delicious.
Is briki coffee stronger than espresso?
Most people find it slightly milder than espresso. Greek coffee is actually very different from espresso. Greek coffee is brewed on a stove with water and special whole-bean roasted Turkish Blend ground coffee, then filtered through a metal strainer into a cup known as a brakkos, or ibrik. In terms of aroma and flavour, Turkish coffee has a strong taste. Since the ground coffee beans are not filtered, some of it remains suspended in the drink. The very fine grind contributes to a thicker coffee and stronger taste compared to a regular cup of coffee. Turkish coffee is considered a moderate coffee.Another potential downside to Turkish coffee is its high caffeine content. Some people who are sensitive to the effects of caffeine may experience sleep disruptions, anxiety and other side effects when drinking caffeinated coffee ( 19 ). What’s more, caffeine can raise blood pressure.
What is the disadvantage of Turkish coffee?
While there are many positive aspects, it’s essential to consider Turkish coffee side effects as well. Its strong caffeine content can lead to insomnia, restlessness, or increased anxiety if consumed late in the day or in excessive amounts. Turkish coffee contains high caffeine.
