What is Storyville known for?
A legalized prostitution district associated with the early development of New Orleans-style jazz existed from 1897-1917. Romanticized by early historians as the birth-place of jazz, this red-light district included brothels, bars and dance halls where jazz artists performed and socialized. Storyville was once the center of gambling, jazz, and legalized prostitution in New Orleans. More than a century ago, this neighborhood became one of the most infamous red light districts in America, known for its opulent brothels, saloons, and music halls.
Why was Storyville shut down?
The high-end brothels, however, admitted only wealthy white men. US military officials and racism led to the demise of Storyville. Early in the twentieth century, communities across the United States began shutting down red-light districts. During World War I, the district became popular with troops stationed nearby. The Navy had troops located in New Orleans and the city was pressed to close Storyville. Prostitution was made illegal in 1917 and Storyville was used for the purpose of entertainment. Most of its buildings were later destroyed, and in 1940 its location was used to create the Iberville housing projects.
