What country invented The Lighthouse?
The first lighthouse in recorded history was Egypt’s Pharos of Alexandria. Built around 280 BC, the source of light was a huge open fire at its summit. As well as being the world’s first, it was also the tallest one ever built, standing a colossal 450 feet high. Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the World and the most famous lighthouse in antiquity. It was a technological triumph and is the archetype of all lighthouses since.
Is a lighthouse a warning?
Lighthouses are in hazardous locations, warning ships of dangerous coastlines and treacherous waters. Lighthouses often serve as prominent landmarks along coastlines, creating a recognizable reference point for sailors and boaters. Treacherous Weather Conditions Lighthouses are often located in regions prone to storms, high winds, and rough seas. For example the famous Fastnet Lighthouse, situated on an exposed rock off the coast of Ireland, is notorious for its treacherous conditions.
