Does Nespresso Vertuo accept other pods?
The patented capsules exclude the possibility of trying coffee pods from brands other than Nespresso. It’s important to know that Nespresso® currently holds a patent on Vertuo-compatible capsules (at least until July 21, 2029). This means that, unfortunately, it is not possible to produce them—at least for now.Unlike the original line of Nespresso pods, the VertuoLine design is proprietary and protected by a legal patent. This means that third-party pod manufacturers (like us) are unable to design a similar style of pod.Currently, Nespresso’s Vertuo pods are patented, meaning that companies (besides Starbucks, which has a partnership with Nespresso) cannot make pods for the Vertuo class of machines.Nespresso Vertuo pods are wider and feature more of a dome-like shape than the original capsules. They can also differ in height depending on the type of coffee they create. Beyond this, they are given unique barcodes that carry specific instructions for the Vertuo machines to adhere to.Compatible reusable capsule brands such as SealPod and WayCap are designed to work seamlessly with Vertuo Nespresso machines, allowing you to enjoy your favourite ground coffee while cutting down on aluminium pod waste.
Why are Vertuo pods more expensive?
The most obvious reason is that Vertuo pods are designed to brew larger cup sizes, such as a full mug or even a carafe. As such, they tend to be larger and contain more coffee grounds (and thus, more caffeine per pod). For example, the Carafe Pour-Over Style pod can whip up 18 ounces of coffee in one go! Vertuo Plus is being discontinued and being replaced by the Vertuo Up. Vertuo Up will only be available through Nespresso directly.Vertuo pods only exist because the patent expired on the original ones and Nespresso needed a new pod that you could only get from them.The more premium Vertuo lineup is even more expensive, with pods costing between $0.You can only buy them from Nespresso. What kind of capsules does the Nespresso Vertuo use?
Our Vertuo machines have one button to brew all cup sizes and use dome-shaped capsules, while our Original machines have 2+ buttons or a screen display to select your cup size and use bell-shaped capsules. Unlike the original line of Nespresso pods, the VertuoLine design is proprietary and protected by a legal patent. This tells the machine how much water/ temp/ etc to use. It’s more sophisticated than I thought. Does Costco sell Nespresso Vertuo pods?
I love that I can get Nespresso Vertuo pods via Costco! The Starbucks assortment of pods are so delicious and convenient! This is a luxury item for me so a bit of a splurge price wise but worth it. Tech-wise, the Vertuo coffee pods are the more sophisticated line between the two.Only Nespresso is allowed to make Vertuo pods. The Starbucks ones are made by Nespresso as well. Third parties won’t be able to make them until 2030 something when the patents expire. Can I use other coffee pods in my Nespresso Vertuo?
Nope. Nespresso sells totally separate machines for its original line and Vertuo coffee capsules. The capsules are different in size, shape and function, meaning there’s no way to use them interchangeably. Moreover, Nespresso is the only manufacturer of Vertuo capsules – and the machines that brew them. Aldi coffee pods have a rounded top and a flat bottom, while Nespresso pods have a flat top and a rounded bottom. Additionally, Aldi coffee pods don’t have a barcode system compared to Nespresso Vertuo pods, which means that they cannot be recognised by Nespresso Vertuo machines.Even though you still probably won’t find compatible pods at Aldi, you can still take advantage of Aldi’s cheaper coffee by investing in OriginalLine-compatible reusable Nespresso pods. That’s because the OriginalLine put the user in control of the settings.
