Are Nespresso pods and Nespresso Vertuo pods the same?
The difference between Nespresso original line capsules and Vertuo capsules can be summed up in a few points: Vertuo capsules are bigger. They have different shapes. They work with different machines that use very different brewing mechanisms. Due to their specific barcoding and the fact that the particular dome-like shape that characterises Nespresso Vertuo pods was patented by Nespresso, production of pods that emulate Nespresso Vertuo pods by companies outside of Nespresso is not possible.Unlike the original line of Nespresso pods, the VertuoLine design is proprietary and protected by a legal patent. This means that third-party pod manufacturers (like us) are unable to design a similar style of pod.With more Robusta per pod, Vertuo pods are naturally sold at higher prices. Tech-wise, the Vertuo coffee pods are the more sophisticated line between the two.The only pods that will work in the Vertuo machine are those with the barcode on the underside of the pod. This tells the machine how much water/ temp/ etc to use. It’s more sophisticated than I thought. So far, we haven’t been able to find any other pods that work in the machine other than the Nespresso brand.The original Nespresso pods are small and narrow and come in one size only (since they’re really meant for espresso), while the Nespresso Vertuo pods are wide and round and may differ in height depending on what’s inside.
