Who owns the Fairway Market?
Fairway Market is an American grocery chain founded in 1933 by Nathan Glickberg. The brand is owned by the Wakefern Food Corporation, whose flagship supermarket cooperative network is ShopRite. Nathan Glickberg founded Fairway as a produce store near the corner of Broadway and 74th Street in the late 1930s. The store was passed down to his son Leo, who brought his son Howie into the business.
What happened to the Cotton Club in Harlem?
Following the Harlem riots of 1935, the establishment moved to West 48th Street, but the club never regained its earlier success and was closed in 1940. Since then the Cotton Club name has been appropriated by nightclubs around the world, including a re-creation of the original club in Harlem that opened in 1978. The Cotton Club was a whites-only establishment with rare exceptions for black celebrities such as Ethel Waters and Bill Robinson. It reproduced the racist imagery of the era, often depicting black people as savages in exotic jungles or as darkies in the plantation South.The Cotton Club was Harlem’s premier nightclub in the 1920s and 1930s. The club featured many of the greatest African American entertainers of the era, including Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Fats Waller, Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Nat King Cole, Billie Holiday, and Ethel Waters.The neighborhood bustled with African American-owned and run publishing houses and newspapers, music companies, playhouses, nightclubs, and cabarets. The literature, music, and fashion they created defined culture and “cool” for blacks and white alike, in America and around the world.
